USS Caiman Reunion Details

2010 Reunion - May 17-20, 2010
Reno, Nevada

Our next USS Caiman (SS-323) Association Reunion is only months away in Reno, Nevada starting on Monday, May 17th at hotel Circus Circus. Smitty (Doug Smith) and the Yeo (John Fagereng) have done an incredible job in setting this up for us. They struck some amazing deals for us so we can look forward to having an outstanding time at a VERY reasonable cost. So, mark your calendars and get busy filling out the registration forms. Reservations are open at Circus Circus. Read all about it below.

Registration

Registration packages went out with the January Caiman Tales Newsletter. Included with the newsletter was this registration form. Please note that you need to register before April 15th to take advantage of the special group rate.

Fill out the registration form and send it to:

Parking

The Circus Circus has a huge covered parking garage. There will be plenty of room for all our cars. There is one exception, there always is, RV parking is in an open lot. RV’s can be parked at the hotel but Reno does not allow living in an RV other than at an RV park. Our great room rate just about beats an RV park anyway – well close. All shipmates that will be arriving by motorcycle need to mark their registration forms with an M/C so we can get a count on the number of motorcycles. This will allow us to have a special parking area set aside for the privileged few.

RV and Camping Facilities

There are eight RV parks within 6 miles of the hotel. Here they are:

1. Chism Trailer Park, 1300 W 2nd St., Reno, 1.8 miles from the hotel, 775-322-2281
2. Reno RV Park, 735 Mill St., Reno, 1.9 miles from the hotel, 775-323-3381

4. Bonanza RV Park, 4800 Stoltz Rd., Reno, 3.6 miles from hotel, 775-329-9624
5. River's Edge RV Park, 1405 S. Rock Blvd, Sparks, 4.3 miles from hotel, 775-358-8533

Trip to Carson and Virginia City

On Wednesday, May 19th at 9:00 a.m. tour buses will take us from the hotel through Nevada’s Capitol, Carson City and on to Virginia City. Once we arrive, our personal guide will escort us through the downtown telling many legends of “rags to riches” and “riches to rags.” We will have time to stroll down the wooden sidewalks and explore the many original saloons, gambling halls, antique shops or visit old Victorian Mansions, museums and churches. We will have the opportunity to ride in your choice of open cars or in the caboose for a 35 minute narrated train tour from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back, going through the most famous of the bonanza Comstock mines. Lunch will be provided at the Palace Club restaurant. The tour will last about 5 to 6 hours.

Golf Tourney

Yes, we will have a golf tournament. Phil McGaughey has agreed to setting it up and running it again. Check back here and in future newsletters for more info.

Hospitality Suite

Our hospitality suite will be open from 0800 till midnight with two exceptions. The hospitality suite will be closed on Tuesday during the luncheon and Thursday during the banquet as both meals will be in a different room. Good news is that the short walk will help you build up an appetite. As long as someone stays at the hotel during the Virginia City tour, the hospitality suite will be open. As usual we will have free beer, soft drinks, water, and coffee. Sticky buns will also be available in the mornings for those who do not want to go to breakfast. Also, don’t forget the ship store. Remember the money you spend at the CAIMAN ship store supports our newsletters and reunions.

Uniform of the Day

CASUAL dress is the uniform for every day. Jeans, tee shirts, polo shirts, shorts and sandals what ever. The banquet is business casual or pants and a shirt. As long as you are dressed for the street it will be OK. We are at the reunion to enjoy ourselves so let’s do it. Ladies, please dress comfortably and be prepared to enjoy yourself.
